The Importance of Health Equity: A Look at World Health Day 2025

By: Nyanchama Sharon

Did you know that April 7th marks World Health Day? Now that you do, let me tell you the importance of this day. World Health Day is an imperative global call to action that addresses health challenges faced by millions. With this year's theme being health equity, it ensures that everyone has access to quality healthcare, regardless of socioeconomic status, gender, or geographical location. At We Hold a Hand, we believe that mental health is an integral part of this conversation.

Understanding Health Equity

As people advocate for issues such as gender equity, climate action, and economic action among other important causes, it is also important to know that Health Equity is crucial too.

Health equity means that all individuals are entitled to a fair and just opportunity to attain their highest level of health (World Health Organization, 2024). However, there are a lot of systematic barriers such as Poverty, stigma, and inadequate healthcare services that hinder many, especially those with mental health challenges.

The Mental Health Gap

To date, mental health remains one of the most neglected areas in global healthcare and advocacy, with mental health disorders being among the leading causes of disability.

According to the World Health Organization 2024, depression and anxiety disorders affect over 300 million people globally, yet many people lack access to affordable treatment. In Kenya and other countries across Africa, such as Uganda, Tanzania, and Nigeria, mental health remains underfunded, and social stigma discourages individuals from seeking help. This disparity underscores the urgency of prioritizing mental health equity.

Our Role in Bridging the Gap

At We Hold a Hand, we are committed to advocating for those facing mental health challenges by:

  • Raising awareness about mental health through community outreach and education.
  • Providing empowerment programs to help individuals regain confidence and independence.
  • Peer Support: Creating safe spaces for individuals to share their experiences and support each other through their journeys.
However, our advocacy goes beyond just mental health. We believe that all people are equal and deserve dignity, respect, and access to essential health services. True equity means ensuring that no one is left behind, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Why It Matters

Health is not a just a privilege, it is a fundamental human right. Without addressing health equity, millions will continue to suffer in silence. This World Health Day, let’s take a stand for all-around inclusive and passionate health care that prioritizes mental well-being alongside physical health. Together, we can dismantle the barriers and foster a world where everyone can access the compassionate care they truly need.

Join us in this movement because when We Hold a hand, we uplift a life.
